Rain Rain, Go Away...

...don't come back to Byron Bay.

So last night after I posted yesterday's blog post, we were sitting in the room and started chatting to the guys we were sharing with. After a while they said they were going out and asked us if we wanted to go. We decided to go with them and the 5 of us went to Cheeky Monkeys again. We were out until about 1am before coming home and chatting in the room. Eventually we all went to bed. I felt sorry for one of the guys as he had to be up for work at 8am.

When we woke up this morning, it was chucking it down. We has gotten up and ready for 10am but it rained all morning so instead we stayed on our room and played cards with the two Dutch guys we're sharing with. At around midday it stopped so we decided to go out. We decided to visit Byron Bay lighthouse. Google maps reckoned it was take 45 minutes to walk. It was so hot and it seemed to take forever. It was mostly uphill but thankfully a large part of it was through the forest. We were very sweaty by the time we reached the top but it was definitely worth it for the views. We had a very quick tour of the light house that allowed us to go up to the beacon level. Apparently it's the brightest lighthouse in the southern hemisphere.  From the top of the lighthouse we spotted a turtle and a stingray in the sea. We also think we saw a pod of dolphins, which are often spotted in this area, but we were so far away it was hard to tell.

After we'd been up the lighthouse we walked about 300m further to the most eastern point of mainland Australia. The views of the sea and Byron bay were just amazing. The sea was a bluey/green colour and the sands were white and you could see for miles. Byron Bay is such a beautiful place, despite the jellyfish.

We trekked back down after we'd seen all the views. By the time we got back to the hostel we were both dripping with sweat. It was so hot today. There was a nice breeze in some places but it was still burning hot.

After showering and chilling in the room for a bit we went to a free bbq. We had two hot dogs each then we got a stamp that got us free glasses of two ready made cocktails at cheeky monkey. We had a couple of drinks then headed to the beach to see the lighthouse lit up in the dark. On the way we noticed a group of people looking and taking photos of something. We went to investigate and found what they were looking at was a rather large python curled up on the top of a fence. I did not expect that. I didn't expect to see any big snakes just on a fence on the sidewalk! We took photos from a safe distance and hurriedly moved on to the beach. The town was still quite buzzing despite it being around 11pm. There was some people on the beach with coloured lights on. Not sure what they were doing but a couple looked like they were dancing. We looked at the lighthouse for a bit before strolling back to the hostel. As we walked past the python some guy started poking it with a stick. He obviously wants to die.

We went back to the hostel and sat under the ceiling fan in our room. It's still so hot.
